Bunjil the Creator - Rickie Martin

This extraordinary work, Bunjil the Creator, by Rickie Martin (@gugumah_), is a striking 2.4m x 1.2m leadlight and stained glass piece that showcases both technical mastery and cultural depth.

Bunjil is rendered using traditional stained glass painting techniques, with each individual piece painted and kiln-fired up to eight times to achieve remarkable richness and detail. Subtle sandblasted highlights across Bunjil’s feathers add further dimension and luminosity to the work.

Commissioned for the foyer of the newly refurbished Collingwood campus of Melbourne Polytechnic (@melbpoly), the piece stands as a powerful and inspiring expression of First Nations spirituality, both visually captivating and deeply meaningful within its architectural setting.
