Let The Light Shine

memorials in glass for military service
from the Boer War to Afghanistan

GLAAS INC announces the release of ‘Let the Light Shine’, a documentary unveiling the rich history of Australian commemorative stained glass.

From pre-Federation to the modern era, Australia has been involved in many major global conflicts including the Boer War, the First and Second World Wars, Vietnam and Afghanistan.

Memorials in glass inevitably followed, works which honour those who served and those who died. The documentary reveals connections between the past and the present, and offers a new perspective on
commemoration in the 21st century.

Audiences will better understand the history of glass as an art form and commemorative technique spanning centuries, more recently with regard to Australia’s involvement in wars.

 - Dr Rosalie Triolo FRHSV

Encompassing themes from across a century of war and commemoration, the documentary focuses on windows from around Australia - the first time that service and sacrifice has been examined through the medium of commemorative glass.

‘Let the Light Shine’, filmed by imaginACTION’s Dr David Smith with script and narration by broadcaster Fiona Gruber, unearths a fascinating tale of courage, conflict and civic pride through the enduring beauty of glass, as told by art historian and stained-glass expert, Dr Bronwyn Hughes, and social and commemorative historian, Dr Bart Ziino.

Enquiries for free screenings across Australia are welcome.
