World War II

Papua New Guinea - Kokoda

The 58th–59th Battalion Association honoured their fallen comrades with a large stained-glass memorial window in St. Bridget’s Church, Mordialloc, built by their former chaplain, Father James (Jim) English. Installed on the west wall, the window depicts St. Michael as a symbol of the fight against evil, alongside images of soldiers climbing New Guinea’s mountain ridges in 1943 and inscriptions of the Battalion’s key battles. Contributions to the memorial came from members “regardless of creed.”

Father English (1913–1986) served with the Battalion through the gruelling New Guinea and Bougainville campaigns, often trekking alone through jungle tracks to minister to his men. After the war he became chaplain at Heidelberg Military Hospital, then parish priest at Mordialloc, where he served for 37 years until his death.
